As the days get longer, we turn our thoughts to Spring: its
chores, its new beginnings, its seasonal delights. Kiting
fits into each of these aspects: cleaning and repairing last
season’s flyers and flying line, checking out the new
products or making a new kite, running outside on the first
spring-like day to fly. Kiting has always been one of our
most simple pleasures.
Yet some governments in this world prohibited kite flying.
After that activity was banned for 5 years while the country
was under control of the Taliban, people are flying kites
again in Afghanistan. For more information, check out Carnet
de Vol-2006 December newsletter (www.carnetdevol.org).
So every time you fly your kite, you are celebrating freedom
(even if the wind doesn’t cooperate).

Hints for an Easier Activity
I have found a wonderful site for using kite making in the
classroom: Teaching ESL (English as a Second
Language) Content through Kite Making for Grades K-12.
Visit
http://eric.ed.gov. In the SEARCH box enter in ED362016.
That references the article which uses kite making as a way
to teach elementary and secondary students. Some of the
topics covered are math operations, scientific principles,
language arts and a bibliography.
