As the days get longer, we turn our thoughts to Spring: its chores, its new beginnings, its seasonal delights. Kiting fits into each of these aspects: cleaning and repairing last season’s flyers and flying line, checking out the new products or making a new kite, running outside on the first spring-like day to fly. Kiting has always been one of our most simple pleasures.

Yet some governments in this world prohibited kite flying. After that activity was banned for 5 years while the country was under control of the Taliban, people are flying kites again in Afghanistan. For more information, check out Carnet de Vol-2006 December newsletter (www.carnetdevol.org). So every time you fly your kite, you are celebrating freedom (even if the wind doesn’t cooperate).

Kites…on a Roll® News

The American Kitefliers Association and Kite Trade Association International have designated March 31 ‘til April 30, 2007 as National Kite Month (5 full weekends to promote kite flying). Any event related to kiting (local fun flies, school demonstrations, kite making workshops, library displays, etc.) can be registered for free event posting. Visit www.nationalkitemonth.org for free information on conducting workshops, kite plans, teacher help, event posting.

Drachen Foundation (Seattle WA) has created 4 wonderful pieces about different aspects of kiting: Flying a kite, Why a kite needs a tail, What is a Dihedral, Forces of flight. We are happy to send you a copy of any or all of the articles. Contact us at judy@kitesonaroll.com or call 800-257-4222 and tell us what you would like to read.

Hints for an Easier Activity

I have found a wonderful site for using kite making in the classroom: Teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) Content through Kite Making for Grades K-12. Visit http://eric.ed.gov. In the SEARCH box enter in ED362016. That references the article which uses kite making as a way to teach elementary and secondary students. Some of the topics covered are math operations, scientific principles, language arts and a bibliography.
