Do you realize it has only been 99 years and counting since
humanity stopped being earthbound? 2003 is going to be an exciting celebration for
flight: it’s the centennial anniversary of the Wright Brothers
first flight which took place on December 17, 1903. On
that day, Orville and Wilbur Wright launched their
gasoline-powered, single engine, twin-propeller biplane over
the dunes in North Carolina. There are a number of web sites

Here are
some kite festivals and celebrations to jot down in your spring calendar:
The wonderful fly at the Smithsonian Institution is
scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2003, and National Kite Month (April 1- May
4, 2003)-a great welcome to Spring- offers all kinds of kiting experiences
whether you are a new or experienced flier.

also contains lots of information about kite flying, the Wright Brothers, and
all kinds of free resources.
In honor of the Wright Brothers’ singular
achievement, the American Kitefliers Association annual convention (a wonderful
event, both on and off the field) will be held in the fall at Wright Patterson
Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. You will find more sky filled events listed at www.aka.kite.org.
Hints for an Easier Activity
We discovered a terrific sticker: It’s called Scratch Magic
™ stickers by Scratch Art. The black stickers come in
different shapes with a wooden drawing stylus that is used
to scratch out colorful images. Call 1-800-377-9003 to find
a dealer near you.
We think we have solved the tape problem! We are hoping to
have the tape available for purchase with our kite kits by
the end of March. I can’t believe how hard it has been to
track down a tape that really sticks (but is not too
sticky), is appropriate for a craft project and is
reasonably priced.
